Not sure why it's not working June 3, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Can someone shed a light on this for me. I bought one of these splitters to connect my PS3 and DVD player to my Pioneer Amp which only has one optical input. I could not get any sound at all with the 2 devices hooked up at once so I removed one and basically tried just passing through the device, I had absolutely no success. The cables work alone without problem but the instant I use the splitter no sound passes through. Keep in mind this is with only one device hooked up, so the problem of the weakened split signal is not an issue. I tried every possible combination of different optical cables (I have 3) the PS3 and DVD player...nothing! I assumed the splitter was defective, but as a last ditch effort I then took it and one of my cables to a friends house to try it on his system...it worked. So now I have no idea what to do. He has a Yamaha Amp, I have a Pioneer VSX-D711....can my Amp be the problem? My optical cables are just cheap ones that work fine on their own...can they be the problem? If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate the input. Thanks in advance.

Does not work as a combiner May 27, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I could not get a signal through this. I know my cables are good because I can take out the cables and hold them with the ends touching to get sound from my receiver, but if I put this between them I get nothing. It claims to have no signal loss, but the one I received does have signal loss... total loss...
Quality Control Issues? May 21, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I saw an equal number of negative and positive reviews about this product, so I figured for less than $10 it was worth a shot.
I have an audio receiver with only 1 fiber optic input, but have two devices with fiber optic outputs (Xbox 360 and Comcast HDTV Box). While this product was designed as a splitter (i.e. taking audio from one source and sending it to two sources, like a receiver plus a set of headphones, etc.), I read several reviewers using it for dual input as I desired.
Some reviewers reported that this item worked great, but unfortunately that was not my experience for two reasons:
1. I could only get one of the inputs to work consistently (i.e. one device would get audio through, while the other rarely did). This is probably due to quality control problems (i.e. the internal components are configured correctly, so something is loose or misaligned), or the second reason that I was disappointed. 2. The connections were not tight, and so the cables would pop out or jiggle, leading again to signal loss and no audio. Obviously not what I'm shooting for, especially if I have to occasionally move the cables if I need to get behind my TV cabinet, etc.
My guess is that this is a quality control problem / shoddy workmanship, which is why it works great for some, but not at all for others. If you're willing to risk $10 for a 50/50 shot at a (theoretically) perfect solution to your problem, I say go for it! I did!
P.S. If you do buy this and happen to get one that works fine, watch out for one potential problem: both audio sources can't be on and sending audio signals at the same time (i.e. I couldn't have my Xbox and Cable Box on and transmitting sound) - obviously this would lead to either a combination of both signals being played through your receiver, distortion, or full loss of sound. I'm not sure which. If you're using it as a splitter, you probably would be OK because the audio signal would just be sent to two destinations, but that is just speculation on my part. Good luck!
Waste of time, waste of money, complete junk May 19, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was looking to connect my PS3 and DVR from Time Warner to my Samsung surround sound receiver. First before even buying it I made sure that neither transmitted a signal while turned off. So I figured I should be ok. So I used a cable from Phillips I got at Evil Walmart that I already had been using. I ordered the splitter and 2 Toslink cables from Amazon. When I connected them... nothing. Using each cable I connected each unit to the Samsung directly and it worked fine. So I knew it wasn't any of the cables. I even turned the PS3 all the way off (not just sleep mode) and it still didn't work.
What I did notice that the red light from the PS3 and DVR were very bright. But when I connected the third cable to the splitter that would go to the Samsung, then the light was very dim and diminished. In fact it's not red anymore. It's pink! So I'm definitely getting a weakened signal, too weak to do what it's intended for. And like some here have said, it's not worth the effort to return it. It seems to definitely be a crap shoot as to whether this product will work or not. So I can only recommend, DO NOT BUY.
results in static-y audio April 27, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Tried using this to switch between an Xbox 360 optical audio out and a PS2 optical audio out. I had high hopes, but the resulting output is static-y and drops out, no matter what cables or configuration I try. It.. sort of works. But not well enough to keep using it. :(
