Piece of junk, not for use with Xbox360 !!! February 22, 2008 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
Preface: 1. I was using a brand new linksys router, and 2. I am VERY electronics savvy and never have trouble with these types of installations. So, should have been as easy as pie, right?
I purchased this specifically for use with an Xbox360. Out of the box, setup took 10 minutes, and I was online playing with no problems. However, I was on an unsecure connection and this resulted in serious lag when neighbors were online as well. I tried configuring the security features for about 30 minutes, could not, and then called Linksys customer service. Customer service kept me on the phone for 3 separate calls spanning FOUR HOURS configuring and reconfiguring the set up. When they finally suggested I take the Xbox upstairs to be closer to the router for further tests, I said enough was enough, and asked them to just restore the settings so I could play with an unsecure connection.
Here's the kicker: They had done so many different things, they could not remember how to go back to the original settings! We spent another hour resetting the game adapter and router, and at that point the router still didn't work, so they declared it defective and said I had to return it to amazon. Terrible product, atrocious customer service, and decidedly not worth saving the $30 over Microsoft's plug and play 360 wireless adapter which, while I admit is overpriced, does exactly what it is supposed to do. I think the time I just wasted was easily worth the $30 difference, and will avoid Linksys products like the plague in the future.
WARNING!!! February 22, 2008 0 out of 5 found this review helpful
I can not warn you reading this review strongly enough, DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!! I am a computer nerd, really I am. I can now admit it (I have a girlfriend, she likes me cause I can fix her computer). After spending 2 yes TWO, hours on the phone to India I still could not get this to work right. NO Apple support, no one without an accent you have any chance of understanding. And NO CONNECTION!!! Linksys is bad. Really bad. Don't waste time or money. Buy the Apple Express Base Station.
DirecTV Video On Demand February 20, 2008 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
I just purchased this today and won't receive it until Friday. I am hoping that this adapter has the CAT5 connector on the end, I read the product description but didn't find anything stating whether it was USB or CAT5. My DirecTV only works with a CAT5, the USB is still not available. DirecTV now has for free Video On Demand (VOD) starting with channel 1000. So if USA is channel 245 on DirecTV then 1245 will be the DirecTV VOD. When I get this I hope it's compatible with my 2WIRE QWEST modem because I am running a wireless network I need for this adapter to work with my wireless modem. Once I have my VOD hooked up and hopefully running well I will post another review or update to let you know if this works for the DirecTV VOD service. The price I paid here is the same as Newegg and a couple other places but with Amazon my shipping was free. Keeping my fingers crossed! Well I have owned it now for two weeks and it works great picking up my neighbors wireless connection but not mine. I ran the setup disk (first mistake) and tried to get it to download my DirecTV VOD but it just doesn't want to seem to work on my network, I would make sure before you buy this that you have more knowledge about wireless networks than the average user because I can't get mine to work, the lights come on and it says its working but it's not, oh well.
Just want I was looking for February 11, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This product works great with my Xbox 360. I have had no problems. After a quick setup it just works. I am very impressed with the range. My router is on the other side of the house and I put the adaptor inside of a book case with no problems. Most of the defaults matched my wireless setup out of the box. I run 128-bit non-broadcast WEP with DHCP. All I needed to program my WEP key and change from Static IP's to DHCP.
Useful as a bridge, but has quirks February 9, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have been using the WGA54G (version 2, firmware level 1.16) for about 1.5 years to bridge two wired nets together. The first net is based around a Netgear WGT624 wireless router (which is also connected to the DSL modem), and the second is based around a cheap Hawking switch. The WGA54G is connected to the switch, and bridges it to the Netgear router. The network includes a variety of computers (Windows NT, XP, Vista, SGI IRIX, and Linux), a couple of printers, and a Wii.
There are many other Amazon reviews documenting the difficulty of configuring the WGA54G, so I won't repeat them. However unlike many reviews, I have found that WPA-PSK authentication IS supported - at least in my 'version 2' box. The trick, it seems, is to use the TKIP setting - NOT the WPA2 AES setting. I simply could not get the AES setting to work with my Netgear router. These settings are made from the 192.168.1.250 web page, by clicking the 'edit security settings' tab.
Speaking of the web page, it is only reachable from the 'hard-wired' side of the box. And sometimes it is not available. You have to power cycle the box to get the web page to come up.
Though it was frustrating to set up, I feel that if the documentation were improved, and bugs were fixed in the firmware, this product would easily rate 4 stars.
